IMPORTANT TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVEL
Getting there
The best way to arrive in Machangulo is by boat, taking a transfer from Marina of Maputo or Maputo fish arbor, around 6.000 mts for a return trip per person, or renting an entire boat for approximate 40.000 mts a return trip. Do not worry we take care of logistics.
Malaria
It is considered a low-risk Malaria region. In order for malaria to be spread it needs concentrations of Anopheles mosquitos as well as a population of people infected with malaria. Due to the Machangulo area’s low population density and few mosquitos, we do not recommend taking preventive medication. Nevertheless, Mozambique is considered a malarial region. Please consult your doctor for recommendations before traveling.
Local supplies/amenities
The village is small and remote. Basic provisions are available but it is best to bring all the supplies from Maputo. You can find bread and some vanity products but are never guaranteed.
Restaurants
There is a reliable restaurant option named Bemugis in Santa Maria, the experience is one of a kind, dining with the feet on the sand.
Medical Emergencies
There is a clinic on Inhaca Island, 5 minutes in a small boat which is capable of administering a drip and performing basic stabilization of patients.
More severe emergencies will need to be transferred to Maputo for medical attention. During the day, a boat can be scrambled for the crossing – even in relatively bad weather. At night, however, skippers will be reluctant to cross to Maputo in bad weather. Helicopters are also not easily dispatched in bad weather at night.
The community of Villas and lodges in the vicinity are quite friendly and helpful in case any emergency arises.
